There are a narrow strip of land in the Kaliningrad region, stretching from Zelenogradsk for a hundred kilometers to the Klaipeda itself (Lithuania). This land is called the Curonian scythe, which is truly not a good place.
This sandstone sushi strip (400 meters in a narrow place, about 4 kilometers - wide), separates the freshwater waters of the Curonian Bay and the Baltic Sea Water. The National Park was founded here in 1987, and in 2000, UNESCO included this place in his World Heritage List.
Spit formed thousands of years ago from the sand brought here by the wind and waves. Gradually, she began to overcoming and be covered with vegetation. This is a very fragile ecosystem, strongly affected. As a result of human activity, a thin vegetable layer, holding back the sand, was destroyed. The sands were exposed, and the wind risen them from the shore, on the way, falling asleep whole villages. Thus, whole deserts, called dunes, were formed. Sand in the dunes is in motion still.
Curonian Spit is also famous for its "abnormal" zones. Not far from the village of Fisheries, there is an amazing place called the "Dancing Forest" people. Trees trunks, in this forest twisted in an incomprehensible way. No one can explain the nature of this phenomenon.
The Curonian Spit is considered to be a great place to relax for tourists. Vacationers attracts the local nature of the terrain and the purest sandy beaches. Since the Curonian Spit is a protected area, then on its territory it is necessary to adhere to the elementary rules of behavior. To curb the dunes, they put special barriers and plant green "hedges". It is impossible to disperse fires, cutting out forests, collect plants - all this can lead to negative consequences. On the territory of the Curonian Spit are containers for garbage and beytails. For sand dunes, it is forbidden to walk, for the convenience of guests there are special pedestrian walkways with several routes.
