Gagha is the most popular resort of Abkhazia, located 15 kilometers from the Russian border and 36 kilometers from Adler-Sochi Airport. The surrounding resort of the mountains protect from cold winds and hold warm air - this is one of the reasons for the popularity of GGR since its foundation in 1903 by Prince Oldenburg, in Soviet times, when she was considered one of the best All-Union resort, and in our days, becoming the most visited resort Modern Abkhazia.
The second reason for the popularity of this resort is in the beauty of its nature and monuments of local architecture.
Primorsky Park Prince Oldeburgsky is one of the main attractions of the city. The park with a length of six kilometers spread out along the entire coast of Old Gagr, starting directly from entering the city from the Russian border. Here are over 400 different types of colors, trees and shrubs - magnolias, olendra, candied trees, eucalyptus, sequoia and many other plants.
From the Primorsky Park on the cable car, you can reach the castle of the relative of Nicholas II Prince of Oldenburg, who dreamed of doing Gagra by local Nice. In Soviet years, the Sanatorium named after Stalin was here, later - the seagull sanatorium. The castle was set fire and looted during the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict in the early 90s of the 20th century, work is now being restored.
Not far from the park and the castle - the restaurant "Gagripsh", the symbol of the Gagr, a centenary building built from Norwegian pine without a single nail. In the old days, the writers of A. P. Chekhov were here, I. A. Bunin, M. A. Gorky, Fedor Ivanovich Shalyapin, and Nikolai II, and Joseph Stalin arrived at the restaurant scene. The restaurant was repeatedly reconstructed, but did not lose its original appearance. The mechanical clocks on the facade have not changed, which to this day are shown manually. "Gagripsh" now offers dishes of Abkhaz cuisine, however prices here are much higher than in other Gagre restaurants.
Not far from the castle of Prince Oldenburg and Restaurant "Gagrpish", in the very center of Old Gagr is a colonnade - the main attraction and the pride of not only the resort, but also of Abkhazia. The construction of a colonnade (as well as the Central Embankment of the city) was conducted in the first decade after the Great Patriotic War, it became a symbol of the revival of the resort city in the era of the Soviet Union. A semicircle near the colonnade fountain is considered "gates" leading to the sea and local beach. From here, picturesque views of the sea, attracting smokers from the entire city.
Abate fortress and the Gagra Temple are located in Old Gagra at the very entrance to the city. The fortress was built on approximately in the IV-V centuries of our era, alternately belonged to the Genoesers, the Turks, and later Russian troops. Inside the fortress was built by the church of St. Ipatiya Gagr. And now the temple is held worship.
The main attractions of the resort are in the old part of Gagr. From the new Gagra (where most of the holidaymakers are located) you can walk on foot, or get on the minibus, the fare price is about 20 rubles.
