The city of Rethymnon Island Crete is located in the western part of the island, somewhat different climatic and natural conditions. Traveling around the island of Crete from its eastern part to Western, you can see how the deserted terrains of the East are replaced by more green horizons of the West, as the amount of green vegetation, like rocks and mountains along the coast, are replaced by a large number of sandy beaches. Already on the way to Rethymno, you can see several chic beaches equipped for relaxation, reminiscent of Miami beaches from the TV screen of the TV, rather than the scarciful usual image of the rocky beach of European resorts. At the sight of such a picture, I want to run out of the bus and straight to rush into this fascinating landscape. We traveled in August, in the midst of tourist summer, the height of the weather was felt in Rethymno even when we arrived there at 5 pm. It was a feeling that you are in a hot desert, incredible heat and the sun surprised us at such a later time, this western part differs from Eastern - due to the geographical position in Rethymnon, really hotter weather, unlike East Crete.
First of all, we went to the most famous place of an old city - to the Venetian fortress Fortezza, it can be seen from different points of the city, as it is located on a towering hill on the railway line. The fortress is striking by its greatness, age, scale, this is the most real ancient defensive structure, with numerous rooms, trenches, strokes. Being on the site of this historical monument, you can not yourself and imagine that once in this place the story described in school textbooks, the history of wars and confrontation, which changed the lives of tens of thousands of people, their culture, life, national ways.
The fortress is also a chic viewing platform with stunning views of the seaport, bays, the sea shore, the sunset, to which we just do and hit during Fortesz walk, as well as on the whole city, represented by thousands of little stone houses .
The next place where we went to, there was a small harbor, having a rounded form, due to which, from each of its point, a view of the ancient lighthouse was another landmark of Rethymnon. Here it was possible to relax from the long walk, sit in one of the top ten local taverns and enjoy Greek cuisine and fabulous views.
In general, walking around the city, you begin to lose the feeling of the reality of what is happening. The city of Rethymno is more like a fabulous city, a city from historical films about the Middle Ages, it seems that you yourself are in the film. An extraordinary landscape with the embankment, the road to which passes along the whole city, the sun, which slowly goes over the line of the sea horizon, the rocks, on which small taverns and hotels are located, narrow streets, on the edges of which almost immediately, opposite each other, are vintage Houses of local residents, a quiet measured atmosphere - the locals are hiding in their homes in the courtyards in the shade, and the quiet groups of tourists are elegted and does not hurry enjoy the views of historical sites. Amazing place Rethymnon gives a complete set of aesthetic pleasure and inner nirvana.
