It is difficult to answer the question whether it is worth going to Trieste, especially with my subjective attitude, because this city is very sympathetic to me.
It will not be possible to engage in some fantastic shopping: the choice of clothing in stores is difficult to call interesting, and prices are not the lowest in Italy. There are no outstanding attractions: Must See Trieste, in my opinion, is only the Castle of Miramare, who is not even in the Trieste itself, but in its surroundings, still the other architectural monuments are in the shadow of Venetian beauty. The magnificent beaches with a gentle entrance to the water here are also not found: the beach is adapted by the city embankment, where on numerous benches, and even on the asphalt, throwing a towel on it, the locals and few tourists sunk.
All this is the case, but there is some charm in Trieste, who conquered me, although I saw many famous and not very Italian towns. Trieste is a terrific symbiosis of Italy and Austria, as if a miniature vein, a little littered and shabby, moved to the shores of the Adriatic.
It's worth going here if you saw different Italy, but I have not traveled to Trieste and if you have free day or two rest (to capture the neighborhood). This is not exactly necessary to go with the aim of shopping or beach holidays!
And to imbued with this city, the best of all Trieste to visit the traditional time for Europe: late spring, in June or early autumn.
